Do I need a certified Self-Contained Van?
The reality of this is that - if you are travelling in a small van, you have no shower on-board, regardless of being SC or not. Some advertise an outdoor shower - but the use of and dumping of soapy water to the environment is really bad, frowned upon and borderline illegal.
That said everyone needs (or should) shower every couple of days at least - meaning you need to stay at a proper campground every couple of nights.
Between times - there are many excellent DOC (Department of Conservation) campsites that offer toilet blocks and water, in stunning locations for a small fee - including some of the best spots in NZ! (Particularly the ones near Milford and Mount Cook. There are also plenty of these around, so you won’t struggle!
Our advice is - unless you are super budget conscious and/or travelling for a long period (3 weeks +) there is no need to have a SC van.
What are the benefits of a certified Self Contained van?
Your nights between proper campground stays could be free, although you WILL want to stay at some of the DOC sites at least.
You have more options of stay locations. In saying that these are often carparks or road side.
If you are travelling during peak times (Christmas and New Years) and like a lack of planning - you may benefit from the ability to crash with more options.
Can a stay anywhere with a Self Contained van?
No. While there are more options, many areas around towns and national parks are “no freedom-camping” zones and the same penalties apply if you are caught camping here.
What are the penalties for breaching freedom camping rules?
If you camp with a non-SC van in a SC-only area, or camp in a no-freedom-camping zone - penalties may apply.
